Another Favorite Writing Book: The Weekend Novelist

The Weekend Novelist

By Robert Ray

One way to sell a lot of writing books: Promise that your typical wannabe hobbyist writer, the guy who just can’t get it written because of job, school or family will finally, once-and-for-all be able to get his book written using your fool-proof, easy-to-follow- guaranteed plotting-drafting-revision system.

Then there’s The Weekend Novelist,a classic manual that’s been in print for 15 years.

Ray uses a nut’s and bolts approoach to writing a novel in your spare time. He understands that his audience isn’t ready to quit their day job and write full time. Instead, he concentrates on getting the aspiring writer’s butt in the chair with realistic goals and getting them motivated to act on those goals.

The book is well laid out, with plenty of examples, both fiction and non-fiction, with both a glossary and bibliography appended for easy research. The chapters and writing plan are well thought out and logical, covering prewriting, planning and drafting. The Books strong point in my opinion is it’s emphasis on revision. Unlike most books, this one walks you through several drafts before ending up with a small chapter on submission.
