The Worst Joke Ever

Posted by admin on April 28, 2008

Patty Whack was working as a loan officer at her local Bank. Times were good, and the banks were lending money to just about anybody.

However, one day a frog came in and hopped up on the desk.

“I need a loan,” the frog said.

Patty looked at the frog and thought about it for a minute.

“I’m sorry, but we don’t normally lend to amphibians. Do you have any references?”

The frog pulled out a sheaf of papers. “I have references, tax returns and Experian reports right here.”

Patty was flabbergasted that the frog was so well prepared.

“Well, do you have any collateral?”

The frog pulled out an ashtray with a picture of Niagara Falls and handed it to Patty. She took it and looked at it.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“An Ashtray,” said the frog.

Patty didn’t know what to do. The frog seemed to have all the paperwork, but she still didn’t know if she should lend it the money. She decided to ask her supervisor. She excused herself and went over to his office. and explained the situation. The Supervisor asked to see the Ashtray and she handed it over.

He Sighed and handed it back.

“It’s a Knick-Knack Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan.”

First Impressions of Hardy Heron

Posted by admin on April 26, 2008

I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the wife’s AMD 64 last night and have been playing around with it all day. Now, Lorie can cause a computer to stop working by looking at it and is afraid to go Window-less completely. But the new Vista Laptop blows. Several of her favorite older programs don’t work. several of her newer, barely ran on XP won’t on Vista, the memory  and CPU Hog. Show she was willing to give it a shot. Here’s the initial Impressions:

  • WUBI Rocks!- The Wubi installer is pretty awesome. In fact, if there’s one thing to make Heron a Windows killer, this is it. We installed Heron as a file on the Windows drive, and it works perfectly. No partitioning, no destruction, just pure Linux goodness cohabiting peacefully with Windows. Switch back and forth pretty much on the fly. Eventually, I’m sure she’ll find herself using Windows less often each day, until…She’s a Linux Geek like Me!! Bwahahaha.
  • Ubuntu Graphic Designers Rock!- Nice tweaks and overall boost. Very Cool.
  • Firefox Beta Crashes- Not yet ready, better get the release done fast.
  • Why DVD? -Just about everything I’ve tried to install with Synaptic is a third party package from the repository, not the DVD.

Anyway, More updates coming. Have fun.

Linux Distros Updated

Posted by admin on April 25, 2008

A while back I listed my top five Linux Distros: these Live CDs that I enjoyed playing around with before finally taking the Linux plunge with Fedora.

However, after three months, I think you deserve a little update.

First, I am no longer using Fedora. Although it was the first Live Linux that worked out of the box and ran all my peripherals, it was just too slow and clunky. Playing with Gcompris, I kept crashing my graphics, and ended up bored and frustrated.

Finally I switched to PCLinuxOS on the advice of one of my readers. This Mandriva based distro is slick, and promised ATI video support from the install. I’ve been using it ever since, and love it. I’ve since installed nearly every KDE option, and everything works well and the way I want it. The only downside is that the repositories don’t have as much as Fedora, and I lost a couple games I really liked. Aww. And I can’t seem to figure alien ( A package translator) to open other package formats to work with Synaptic.

Then There’s OpenGEU. GEU Stands for Gnome, Enlightenment, Ubuntu. As you can guess, this is a flavor based on Ubuntu. However, it uses a small, blazingly fast window manager called E17 (Enlightenment) instead of either Gnome or KDE. This lightweight manager is supplemented by bits and peices tweaked off of Gnome.Wow. Wow again. This is a cool OS that looks like nothing else. It throw out tas bars, using a rotating iBar in the middle of the screen, kinda like Apple. But it’s designed by Italian artists. And it looks like an Italian Artist designed OS. Guaranteed to make you twelve times cooler. I’ve only played with the live CD on a laptop, but I’m really thinking of installing this.

Hardy Heron Released: Seize the Download

Posted by admin on April 24, 2008

The New release of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron(8.04) was released today.

Over the last couple of cycles the Ubuntu project has become the go-to version of Linux. And this release is getting some major press for a couple of reasons:

  • First, it’s a Long Term Support release. This means security upgrades and patches will be supported by Ubuntu until 2012. Or until the next Windows comes out
  • Ubuntu has worked hard to add the latest and greatest in this release. The core of the OS has been updated with new installer, kernel, interfaces and applications. Heron comes with Firefox 3, OpenOffice 2.4 and other major uprades.
  • Heron gives you three run options: Live from CD and installed you’re probably familiar with. But the Wubi installer also lets you set up a virtual machine, letting you run faster than live and keep your settings from session to sesion without destroying your Windows installation.
  • Real 64 bit support. Take that, Vista!
  • Better Graphic detection, and better error messages means this might be the one that finally works on my gerbil powered, kludgy eMachine
  • Some neat graphic tweaks, if you’re into all that

Head on over to ubuntu and burn a copy to see what all the fuss is about.

Site of the Week: Knights who say, “Ning.com”

Posted by admin on April 23, 2008

Social Networks are here to stay. No one who’s reading this blog can deny the power of developing a network of enthusiastic, loyal readers. Most of us, whether we’re trying to make a blogging career, or using our blogs to promote other works, are constantly trying to build our audience. ( Hi BlogCatalog readers and fans!)

So now we have Ning.com, a social networking site built out of social networking sites.

Like myspace, registering for a free account gives you a personal page that you can invite other users to join. There’s lots of customization options, from colors and themes to widgets and gadgets. It literally takes about two minutes to set up a profile and a page.

However, Ning pages are different. each one is a social networking site in it’s own right. Other members can seek you out and join your site as a member, giving them rights to add content. You can develop a community of fans or an online writing group. Post your writing. Use it as a message board for your Blog.

It’s part Myspace, Part blog, part community. and really neat. Check out Ning.com
