Quantum Racing: It’s Raining Cars

Posted by admin on May 31, 2008

Haven’t been posting as I’m Finishing some projects.

This showed up on Reddit as an example of Quantum Superposition. The game was played 1000 times and the videos superimposed, showing the most probable outcomes of the particle’s (Car’s) position at once. This demonstrates how multiple universes could arise from random chance.

And it’s pretty Cool, too.

Site of the Week: Hulu

Posted by admin on May 21, 2008

The big problem with the internet is that it seems like it’s designed to make you feel like an idiot on purpose.

I don’t mean the fact that every question you post on Yahoo!Answers is answered by some snotty 12-year-old. I don’t mean that every time you try to do research you have your choice of either an impenetrable thesis or incorrect wiki.

I Mean the fact that even though you try to stay abreast of news and features, even though you subscribe to dozens of feeds, constantly google, search Technorati and have alerts automatically sent to your cell phone, you still come across a nifty, cool, useful and entertaining site after millions of other people already know about it. On the Internets, you’re always a Noob somewhere.

Take Hulu.com

Hulu is a free TV and movie Streaming site. Yes Free. As in , Get-your-fix-of-the-A-Team-right-now. As in no money down. Not $1.99. Not $.99. Free.

There’s a catch- The number of shows is inversely proportional to the age and DVD availability. A show airing today might only have the last couple episodes. A classic on DVD might have the entire first season. A show which is no longer selling might have nearly it’s entire run.

And, Of course they’re ad supported.

But this closes the deal: Embeddable content. That’s right. Embed your favorite show in your blog.

So, For Your viewing pleasure, here’s a classic Writer’s movie for Memorial Day Weekend:

Free Political Wordpress Themes

Posted by admin on May 20, 2008

Let’s See… Memorial Day, Independence Day, Party Conventions, The Election… Looks like it’s time to theme your blog in the Red, White and Blue! All these themes are free, but check out the footer..Some are Linkware.

Political Politics- Nice Header image of the capital on a flag background, Adsense enabled, three column. Really like this one.
Political Politics image

Structure- An all around neat magazine/news style template. Not really political, but has a default navy blue theme that’s easily edited. I used it here for a while, and run another site where I changed it to red. Requires a little coding to work properly, but gives you a ton of options and control over your site. Byzantine Roads now runs on the same designer’s Options theme

Liberty- Red Themed with image of Lady Liberty
Liberty Theme

Summer Sky- A Red,White and Blue Theme with a cloudy sky header image. Two coloumn, Linkware, but the designer hosts this themselves and is pretty open about the license.

Political Blue- Interesting concept. Available as a download with seven other themes, including an orange (???) version of the same theme. With Finance, Sports, and Dating, it’s like getting your own blog network all at once.

Probama- Umm… The name says it all. Will probably attract at least 54% of bloggers in the general election. Maybe a McCain supporter can replace the header image. All kidding aside, a nice looking, functional theme with a great feature set. It’s brand new and untested, however. Sorry. Couldn’t resist one last one…

Feeling Dirty-No. Not about lobbyists. But a Grungy, Urban Red, White and Blue Theme.
Feel Dirty Theme

WP Presidents Day 1.0- Coded, linky footer. Posted last month all over paid sites. Nice header image, but I’ve never had much luck with this site’s coded themes: They’re usually had to get working right, if it’s even possible.

Independence Day- Really Basic two column theme. Really Basic. Basic.

‘68 1.0- Retro themed. Nice star shaped red aheader that morphs into the sidebar.

The $3.00 Laptop for Writers

Posted by admin on May 8, 2008

Last year, when I wrote about the $14.99 Laptop for Writers, I don’t think anyone was surprised that I was talking about using a USB drive to store your work and applications.

However, since then, prices have come down (Of course) and features have improved (Of Course).

The advantages of using your own USB drive over internet apps are obvious. first, you get to choose what applications to use and can basically use the same ones that you use at home or work. Second, you own the work. That is, it’s right there on your drive, not on someone else’s halfway across the globe.

Portable apps suite is still the best available. The full featured version has open office, CLAMWin Anti-Virus to keep your host clean, Firefox, Gaim, Soduko and more. There’s a Lite Version that replaces OpenOffice with ABIWord for less that 40M total space, and a BASE version that lets you pick and choose what supported apps you want. Among the apps you can add are GIMP image processing, GNuCash Finance, NVU Web editor and more.

If most of those sound familiar, they should. A lot of these are open source Windows ports of Linux applications. So the question is, why not just put Linux on your USB and carry around your operating system, too? Except that your average Librarian will completely freak out when you reboot her computer, nothing really. There’s lots of small Linux’s around designed to run off hardly any resources at all. Try Puppy Linux, which has just released version 4.0 with two, count ‘em, two different kernels and a slew of apps for under 100M, giving you lots of room on even the cheapest Drive for your works in progress.
