National Novel Writing Month Kick-Off

Posted by admin on November 1, 2008

It’s that time of year! November is National Novel Writing Month. Time to kick yourself in the butt and get that novel out come hell or high water. Tonight you get to write for an Extra hour, and then on Thanksgiving weekend get a couple of extra days off to get caught up. What Are you waiting for? No really, What Are You Waiting For?

  • Check out the Official Site at NaNoWriMo.com. My Screen Name is Lcthulou if you want a writing buddy, or to keep track of my progress. The Site is usually down the first couple of days as it gets swamped, so start writing.
  • Need More inspiration? Want to do better than just churning out a couple hundred random pages? The Success of NaNoWriMo has spawned a cottage industry of Quick-And-Dirty writing books. check out our review of Several Book in a Month Products.
  • Finally, Try the Linux Based Writer’s World Maker. This new, Free product is like a lot of planning software, but better. Set up your novel by giving yourself a word count and daily goal, add chapters and scenes, and get busy writing.Writer’s World Maker seems to be built from the ground up to work the way I do: it’s like they read my mind.

Good Luck, and have a Productive NaNoWriMo!

Site of the Week: Hulu

Posted by admin on May 21, 2008

The big problem with the internet is that it seems like it’s designed to make you feel like an idiot on purpose.

I don’t mean the fact that every question you post on Yahoo!Answers is answered by some snotty 12-year-old. I don’t mean that every time you try to do research you have your choice of either an impenetrable thesis or incorrect wiki.

I Mean the fact that even though you try to stay abreast of news and features, even though you subscribe to dozens of feeds, constantly google, search Technorati and have alerts automatically sent to your cell phone, you still come across a nifty, cool, useful and entertaining site after millions of other people already know about it. On the Internets, you’re always a Noob somewhere.

Take Hulu.com

Hulu is a free TV and movie Streaming site. Yes Free. As in , Get-your-fix-of-the-A-Team-right-now. As in no money down. Not $1.99. Not $.99. Free.

There’s a catch- The number of shows is inversely proportional to the age and DVD availability. A show airing today might only have the last couple episodes. A classic on DVD might have the entire first season. A show which is no longer selling might have nearly it’s entire run.

And, Of course they’re ad supported.

But this closes the deal: Embeddable content. That’s right. Embed your favorite show in your blog.

So, For Your viewing pleasure, here’s a classic Writer’s movie for Memorial Day Weekend:

First Impressions of Hardy Heron

Posted by admin on April 26, 2008

I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the wife’s AMD 64 last night and have been playing around with it all day. Now, Lorie can cause a computer to stop working by looking at it and is afraid to go Window-less completely. But the new Vista Laptop blows. Several of her favorite older programs don’t work. several of her newer, barely ran on XP won’t on Vista, the memory  and CPU Hog. Show she was willing to give it a shot. Here’s the initial Impressions:

  • WUBI Rocks!- The Wubi installer is pretty awesome. In fact, if there’s one thing to make Heron a Windows killer, this is it. We installed Heron as a file on the Windows drive, and it works perfectly. No partitioning, no destruction, just pure Linux goodness cohabiting peacefully with Windows. Switch back and forth pretty much on the fly. Eventually, I’m sure she’ll find herself using Windows less often each day, until…She’s a Linux Geek like Me!! Bwahahaha.
  • Ubuntu Graphic Designers Rock!- Nice tweaks and overall boost. Very Cool.
  • Firefox Beta Crashes- Not yet ready, better get the release done fast.
  • Why DVD? -Just about everything I’ve tried to install with Synaptic is a third party package from the repository, not the DVD.

Anyway, More updates coming. Have fun.
