Taking the Linux Plunge: The Good After One Week

It’s been one week since the switch to Fedora. So Far, I’m not turning back. The Good Stuff:

  • Boot up time is Quick. So quick I get frustrated at my wife’s state-of-the-art Winblows Laptop.
  • Accessibility- I like KDE better than Gnome. I just think it’s more intuitive and is easier to work with.
  • Applications- I miss Dragon Naturally Speaking, but just about every other Application I had I’ve found a replacement that works better. there’s something about open source that just makes things EASIER. My productivity has gone up even though I’ve been sick.
  • Wesnoth, FreeCiv, WarZone, And Pioneers- All Strategy games. All Cool. All Free.
  • Updates- Fedora package manager and pirut make adding, removing and updating programs and drivers a breeze. And since the system doesn’t freeze up or require rebooting, I don’t get that paranoid Oh-My-God-What-Have-I-Done feeling. I even screwed up my display by messing around with the livna repository and STILL managed to repair it. (Although I’m not sure my Radeon 9200 is working to it’s potential…I don’t think I have the right drivers even though Fedora recognizes the card.

I tried Ubuntu. But lost my password, hated making one in the first place. Now I’m back to Windows cause it’s the only option until I tried to guess at my password again. :D

That’s a bummer. Right now I’m in MySQL reseting the admin password for a couple of websites…Lost it with the switch. Sucks.

I do like the Distros that make it easy and automatically log you in as root with no password…Or Slax with it’s Root/Toor setup.
